The Eye of the Beholder: Beauty Standards in the 19th & Early 20th Centuries - See this new temporary exhibit featuring fascinating artifacts including historic cosmetics, accessories and toiletries, and learn about how views on women's appearance have changed over the decades.

Leeches and Lancets, The History of Medical Bloodletting - The new exhibit “Leeches and Lancets: The History of Medical Bloodletting” will open on May 1 at the Julia A. Purnell Museum in Snow Hill. Viewers will have the chance to learn about the historical practice of bleeding patients in an attempt to alleviate illness. Most people know that leeches depend on blood for nourishment. However, the museum's leeches will be feasting on blood from liver courtesy of the grocery store, rather than from live victims. Museum-goers are invited to attend the feedings to see the leeches in action. Feeding programs will take place on May 15 and 29; June 12 and 26; July 9 and 23; August 6. They will be held at 2pm on each of these days. “Leeches & Lancets” will also feature a number of artifacts related to the practice of bloodletting and its historical origins. A large-screen microscope with prepared slides of blood and veins will also be part of this interactive and child-friendly exhibit “Leeches and Lancets” will be on display through August 22

History and Science Home School Program - The Purnell Museum in Snow Hill is offering an educational program for home school students aged 7 – 13 years-old on Wednesday, June 23. Participants will have the opportunity to learn about the fascinating historical medical practice of bleeding patients to relieve illness. This event will be held at the Purnell Museum from 10am – 12pm and will take advantage of the museum's exciting new exhibit Leeches and Lancets: The History of Medical Bloodletting. Students will learn about the history of bloodletting, from Galen's four humors theory to the use of leeches for medicinal purposes. Participants will complete a scavenger hunt worksheet, conduct experiments using the museum's six living leeches, and create a craft project to take home. There is a fee of $5 per child for this program and pre-registration is required. An adult may accompany and assist younger children if necessary. This program is rescheduled from the originally scheduled date of June 9. To reserve a space, call the museum at (410) 632-0515.

Heritage Arts for Kids - Drop in to learn about history, and an aspect of the Purnell Museum's collection, with a hands-on craft. Create and decorate old-fashioned paper doll chains. Pre-registration is not needed. Regular admission applies. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Delmarva Needle Art Show and Competition - View this annual exhibit of needle art by area artists. Works include quilts, counted cross-stich, needlepoint, embroidery, knitting and more. Entries are due by August 24.

Saturday, Oct 9 -  10.00 am - 4.00 pm
FiberFest - Join us for our annual textile arts festival. There will be vendors of fiber art supplies and hand-crafted items including wearables and home decor, demonstrations, food, children's activities, and live animals. This year's FiberFest will be held at the museum. Admission to the festival and the museum are free on this day.

Halloween Costume Party - Join the Julia A. Purnell Museum and Furnace Town Living Heritage Museum to celebrate at an outdoor Halloween extravaganza at Furnace Town. There will be live music, refreshments, and costume contests.

Wednesday, Oct 27 -  10.00 am - 4.00 pm
Julia A. Purnell Birthday Party - Commemorate the museum's namesake on the day of her birth. Free admission and birthday cake.

Saturday, Dec 4 -  10.00 am - 4.00 pm
Nutcracker Christmas - Join the museum for a Christmas celebration inspired by the favorite holiday ballet. See a display of nutcrackers from around the world. The event will also feature a Victorian Christmas Tree exhibit, a children's craft and refreshments inspired by "The Nutcracker." Regular admission applies.

Between Fences Exhibit - A Smithsonian Institution exhibit comes to Snow Hill! See this exhibit at the Snow Hill Library. Between Fences explores the roles of fences--both literal and figurative--in American history and culture. Look for special Between Fences programming throughout the town.
