| Julia LeCompte was born in Snow Hill, Maryland in 1843. She married Williarm H. Purnell, a storekeeper, in 1869 and had two sons. She created many types of needle art throughout her life, including quilts, cross-stitch and embroidery. At the age of 85, Julia Purnell begain embroidering scenes of homes, churches, and gardens in Snow Hill.

The town of Snow Hill was founded in 1642 by English colonists. Established along the Pocomoke River, the town was made a royal port by William and Mary of England; imported goods came through Snow Hill to be taxed. Goods such as cypress lumber and tobacco were exported. Snow Hill was also home to a thriving shipbuilding industry.
